Students Play Pivotal Role in Successful Conference
Accrington and Rossendale College’s brand new Heartwood Centre and Roots Restaurant were chosen to host the annual Chefs UK Conference yesterday, with students from the College’s Hospitality & Catering and Media Departments heavily involved in the planning and execution of the event.
The conference, which was organised by Chef Jobs UK, featured chefs from across the country coming together to talk about the industry. A competition also took place with chefs teaming up together to produce dishes that were judged in a master chef style format.
Professional Cookery Level 3 student Sam Archer explained, “As students of the College, we provided all the chefs with support which was great! I had a great time and gained some valuable experience.”
Students from the College’s Media Department were also on hand, providing photography and filming of the event for organisers Chef Jobs UK. The students, armed with cameras, lighting and sound equipment were able to interview chefs and organisers of the event for promotional purposes as well being able to use the footage as evidence towards their college work.
Creative Media Level 3 year 1 student Georgina Aspden commented, “I really enjoyed the experience. The fact that the event was so busy and intense with so much happening really opened my eyes. I was tasked with photography and I particularly enjoyed being able to get up close to the chefs while they were competing in the competition. I was able to get some really good pictures of some of the dishes they created which I was proud of.”
College Principal and guest judge for the day Sue Taylor said, “The event was a massive success and I am extremely proud of the commitment our students showed in assisting the event. The professionalism and experience shown by both the Media and the Hospitality & Catering students was great to see and it didn’t go unnoticed, with numerous organisers of the event praising our students.”
Christopher Jones, Chef added “The facilities where absolutely fantastic and I can see some great talent coming through the Catering Department. ”
